Edibles — gummies, chocolates, baked goods, and drinks — are one of the most popular ways to enjoy cannabis, and one of the easiest to get wrong. They work differently from anything you smoke or vape, and a little knowledge goes a long way toward a good first experience. Here’s what every new edibles consumer should know.
Edibles work differently
When you inhale cannabis, the effects arrive within minutes. Edibles take a different route entirely: they pass through your digestive system and are processed by your liver before anything is felt. That single difference changes two things that matter a great deal — how long it takes to feel the effects, and how long those effects last.
Onset and duration: the most important part
This is the one thing to understand before anything else. An edible can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to reach its full effect. How long depends on the product, your body, and whether you’ve eaten recently. Once the effects do arrive, they tend to last considerably longer than inhaled cannabis — often several hours.
The most common mistake with edibles is impatience. Someone takes a dose, feels nothing after 30 minutes, assumes it isn’t working, and takes more — then both doses arrive at once, stronger than intended. The golden rule is simple:
Take your dose, then wait. Give it a full two hours before you even consider more.
Start low, go slow
In Ontario, a package of legal cannabis edibles contains a maximum of 10mg of THC. Many people — especially those new to edibles — start well below that, with a 2.5mg or 5mg dose, and see how they feel before going further.
There’s no prize for a bigger dose. You can always take more next time; you can’t take less once it’s been eaten. Starting small is simply the sensible way in.
Read the package
Every legal edible lists its THC and CBD content per piece and per package. This matters more than it sounds. A chocolate bar might be a single 10mg serving, or it might be ten 1mg squares — the label is the only way to know. Check it before you portion anything.
Common formats
- Gummies and soft chews — easy to portion and consistent from piece to piece.
- Chocolates and baked goods — often scored into segments for a reason; use those segments.
- Beverages — teas and sparkling drinks; for some people the effects can feel a little quicker, since there’s less to digest.
Tips for a good first experience
- Know your dose before you start, and read the label.
- Take it with or after food.
- Be somewhere comfortable, with nothing you need to be doing.
- Don’t take more for at least two hours.
- Never drive. Edibles can impair you for hours — well past when you might expect.
- Store all cannabis products safely, out of reach of children and pets.
