Cannabis isn’t shelf-stable forever. Light, heat, air, and humidity all chip away at it over time, and stored badly, even a great product turns harsh, dry, and weaker than it should be within a few weeks.
The good news: keeping it fresh isn’t complicated. Here’s the plain version.
The four enemies
Cannabis quality degrades fastest when it’s exposed to:
- Light — UV breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes.
- Heat — anything above about 21°C accelerates degradation.
- Air — oxygen oxidizes THC into CBN over time, which makes flower more sedating but less potent overall.
- Humidity swings — too dry and flower turns brittle, too damp and you risk mold.
Beat those four and you’ve solved most of it.
Storing flower
The goal: dark, cool, airtight, and slightly humid.
- Container: a glass jar with a tight-sealing lid is the gold standard — Mason jars work fine. Avoid plastic baggies for anything more than a day or two; they pull terpenes out of the bud and build up static.
- Humidity: the sweet spot is 58 to 62% relative humidity. Two-way humidity packs (Boveda, Integra Boost) are cheap and worth it — they keep flower from drying out without making it damp.
- Temperature: cool room temperature, ideally 15 to 21°C. A drawer or closet away from any heat source.
- Light: out of direct sunlight. Opaque or amber jars are best; clear glass is fine if it’s stored somewhere dark.
Don’t keep flower in the fridge or freezer. Fridges have humidity swings every time you open the door, and freezers make trichomes (the resin glands that contain the cannabinoids) brittle enough to break off the bud.
With proper storage, flower stays at its best for 6 months to a year.
Storing pre-rolls
Treat pre-rolls like flower: airtight, cool, dark, with a humidity pack if you have a few. Once a pre-roll’s tube is opened, smoke it within a few days for the best experience.
Storing edibles
Edibles store the way the food version of them would.
- Gummies and chocolates: sealed, room temperature, away from heat. Don’t refrigerate chocolate — it can develop a chalky bloom that doesn’t affect potency but looks unappealing.
- Baked goods: these have the shortest shelf life. Freezing in an airtight container extends it.
- Drinks: follow the printed best-before date. Refrigerate after opening if the label says to.
Edibles lose potency much more slowly than flower — they’re typically stable for 6 to 12 months when stored well.
Storing vapes and concentrates
- Vape carts and disposables: store upright, at room temperature, out of direct sun. Don’t leave them in a hot car — heat thins the oil and can cause leaks.
- Concentrates (shatter, wax, live resin, etc.): cool, dark, sealed containers. Some concentrates actually do well in the fridge — sealed, in a silicone container — especially in summer.
Both keep well for 6 to 12 months sealed.
Safe storage at home
Beyond keeping cannabis fresh, there’s a separate question: keeping it safely out of reach.
In Ontario, you’re required by law to store cannabis securely if there are children or pets in the home. Edibles are the biggest hazard — many look identical to regular candy or chocolate. Treat them the way you’d treat prescription medication:
- Original child-resistant packaging, kept closed.
- A locked drawer, box, or cabinet — especially for anything that looks like food.
- Up high, out of sight, away from where kids or pets could reach.
Cannabis poisoning calls to poison control have risen sharply in Canada since legalization, and the vast majority involve children getting into edibles that weren’t stored properly. It’s an easy thing to get right.

Store it like you’d store something you paid good money for, because you did. And keep it locked away from anyone it isn’t intended for.
